Peace Corps Camp: BUILD (Boys of Uganda in Leadership Development) in Gulu In May 2014, In Movement, in partnership with Peace Corps Uganda, empowered 80 young men from Northern Uganda at Camp BUILD: Boys of Uganda in Leadership Development. The weeklong event focused on five overarching topics: malaria, HIV/AIDS, agribusiness, nutrition, and water and sanitation. The youth presented on these topics at the end of the week through drama, performances, and hands-on activities. The IM facilitators who were present (Bagonza, Davis, and Maria) were able to incorporate various art activities throughout the week, including dance, drama, music, and creative writing. By the end of the camp, the youth had grown their leadership skills, developed their creativity, practiced cooperative teamwork, and learned healthy behaviors. A handful of the youth at camp were born during the time of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict and experiencing a week together to share and bond allowed for self-awareness and moving forward towards a stronger, united Uganda.
Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.
